More toilets to be constructed for women in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to construct more toilets for women in the city.
Women groups in the city have been demanding more toilets, especially for working women, who visit Mumbai daily from far away places. However, despite making repeated demands their attempts had not borne fruit.
Taking note of scarcity of toilets for women, civic chief Ajoy Mehta has assured that the civic body would construct more public toilets for women in the city. He has also issued directives to conduct special inspection of contractors, who had taken up the task of building public toilets for women, but have failed to do so.
The open spaces below flyover bridges would be utilised for constructing public toilets for women, Mr Mehta said, adding there would be provision of water and electricity supply in the toilets.
According to civic officials, public toilets are constructed for the huge floating population at public places like railway stations, bus depots, markets, religious places etc in the city. However, public toilet facilities for women are not available at crowded areas.
Mr Mehta also said that sanitary napkins vending machines would also be installed within the premises of public toilets.
MNS general secretary Shalini Thackeray said, “There are not enough public toilets for women across the city and, if they are, they are in deplorable and unhygienic conditions.”
