The 19-year-old arrested in connection with the alleged molestation of a 22-year-old girl travelling in a Churchgate-bound local train last Thursday — who wrongly gave his name as Pappu Yadav during preliminary investigation — has now revealed his true identity as Pappu Subhasho Das.

After taking custody of Pappu, the Government Railway Police (GRP) took him to a hospital for a medical check-up after which one of his relatives who had come to visit him started making inquiries and subsequently informed the police that his name was Pappu Subhasho Das and not Pappu Yadav. The relative further told the police that Pappu was involved in several nuisance activities in their village in Orissa.

A police officer said, “Pappu’s cousin who works in a small hotel at Fort as waiter met him near the hospital. Later, we called him to the police station. He revealed that Pappu used to send lewd messages to and make indecent gestures in front of women in their village. He had three brothers and two sisters.”

GRP ACP Pradip Bijave said, “We have got to know about Pappu’s real name through his relative. We have got his police custody till August 14. We will find out if there are any cases against him in his village.”

Another issue highlighted by this case was that of the absence of GRP police in the ladies compartment on Thursday. Sources claimed that it was a special train run owing to cancellation of regular services and hence, no police persons were deployed to guard it.

A police source said, “It was a special train announced because trains were running late. Duties are fixed as per the regular time table of the train. But many a times, there is a situation where no police persons are posted in the ladies compartment when special trains are announced. Secondly, it occurs whenever trains get delayed or indicators don’t work. It gets difficult for GRP police to get into the train on the basis of train timings.”

GRP DCP Deepak Deoraj said, “It may have been be a special train. I am yet to get details about the situation on that day.”
