Mrs Shalini Thackeray, on behalf of MNS chief Raj Thackeray, met University of Mumbai (MU) vice-chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh on Saturday and demanded that sanitary napkin vending machines be installed on the campuses of the university for the welfare of the students. According to university officials, Ms Thackeray was assured that the university was already working towards the same and had ordered installation of vending machines at its Fort and Kalina campuses.
A former senate member of the MU Sudhakar Tamboli, who accompanied her in the meeting with Dr Deshmukh, said, “Ms Thackeray has taken the initiative for the welfare of girl students and has met the authorities of various education regulatory bodies and demanded that the vending machines be installed on their premises as well as the premises of institutions affiliated to them. She had also held a meeting of party workers and asked them to follow up with educational institutions over the installation of vending machines.”
Dr Deshmukh has assured Ms Thackeray that the university would do everything required for their welfare and well-being. “Dr Deshmukh informed Ms Thackeray the university was already in the process of installing three sanitary napkin vending machines at its Kalina campus and one at the Fort campus...to align with the women empowerment and healthy India mission,” said a university spokesperson.
Activists from the youth wing of the MNS also visited colleges in the western suburbs and asked them to install the vending machines on their premises.
