The Mumbai-Thane commuters seem to have to wait longer than they had expected since Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has extended its deadline for the completion of Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavali metro corridor from 2019 to 2021.

According to MMRDA’s initial plans, the work on the project was scheduled to start by June 2016, which has not happened yet as the project has not even reached the tendering stage.

In a statement issued on Friday, the MMRDA said authority of the MMRDA-approved detailed project report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the 32-km Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kawarvadavali Metro-4 corridor will cost Rs 14,549 crore. And it said they aim to complete the project by 2021.

The DPR now will be forwarded to the state urban development department (UDD), which will notify the metro corridor by giving a final approval. The statement further said, “This project will help connecting Thane area with the city of Mumbai with a modern public transport system and will have a huge impact on the development of the areas in its vicinity.”

Earlier, MMRDA had plans to extend the Metro-4 corridor from Wadala till CST, but has now decided to only concentrate on the alignments, which was the initial part of the plan. The corridor will have 32 metro stations in total starting from Bhakti Park Metro, Wadala TT, Anik Nagar Bus Depot, Suman Nagar, Siddharth Colony, Amar Mahal Junction, Garodia Nagar, Pant Nagar heading via Tikuji-ni-wadi and ending at Owale near Kasardavali.
