MLC Kapil Patil has objected to the school education departments decision to suspend recruitment of teachers in minority institutions stating that the move is contempt of Article 30(1) of the Indian Constitution that confers right of recruiting teachers in minority institutions and the government cannot take it away.

Mr Patil has said that the suspension has resulted in 900 teachers, employed in 334 junior colleges belonging to minority institutions, not receiving their salaries that will have an adverse effect on the academics in these colleges.

On January 1, director education, N.K. Jarag informed all deputy directors in the state that the government has decided to stop recruitment of primary, secondary and higher secondary teachers. The decision according to Patil was against the Bombay high court’s recent order asking the government to fill up vacant posts of maths, science and english teachers.

Taking a cue from Mr Patil, Shikshak Bharati, a teachers’ organisation termed the January 1 decision of as the one seeking to destroy the education system. Ashok Belsare, president Shikshak Bharati said, “Thousands of posts of teachers who were recruited since May 2012 are yet to be approved. As of today, 900 posts of teachers are waiting for approval in junior colleges in Mumbai. The government should not try to remove these teachers under the guise of CET and should start to pay them their salaries.”

“Ever since the new government came to power, recruitment of teachers was initially stopped in the name of staffing pattern and now it is being imposed under the guise of CET. The government must stop this game. I is affecting students adversely and exploiting teachers,” said Mr Patil.
