Just a few days after superstar Rajinikanth’s recent film Kabali hit the theatres across the country and abroad, BJP MLA Anil Gote on Tuesday demanded that the actor be awarded Maharashtra Bhushan, the state’s highest civilian award. The MLA also added that Rajinikanth should be conferred the Bharat Ratna by passing a resolution by the Assembly members.

“The Maharashtra Bhushan should be awarded to superstar and “son of the soil” Rajinikanth. He is from Kolhapur,” Mr Gote said in the Legislative Assembly.

Rajinikanth, who was born Shivaji Gaikwad in Kolhapur district, moved to Tamil Nadu in search of better career prospects and carved out a demi-god status among film buffs.

“The release of his movie Kabali in 8,000 screens around the world is proof of his stature in Indian cinema,” Mr Gote said. He also suggested that the Assembly should also pass a resolution, asking the Centre, to honour the superstar with a Bharat Ratna.

The actor’s fans, popularly known as Rajini-fans, celebrated the release of his film with much pomp and splendour. From bathing his posters with milk to burning crackers, the fans left no stone unturned to express their love for the film icon. Again, from roads to the social media, the fans took every medium to share their excitement over Kabali’s release. Even celebrities took to Twitter to share their fanboy moments. “MAKE WAY .. THE KING ARRIVES .. #kabali FROM TOM .. Time to celebrate. #firstdayfirstshow #superstar #neruppuda,” tweeted actor Dhanush.
