Expect traffic snarls on the Western Express Highway (WEH) starting from Monday, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) set to start barricading work on three different stretches of WEH for the commencement of civil works for the Andheri (east)-Dahisar (east) Metro-7 corridor.
Further, on Link Road, work on the DN Nagar-Dahisar Metro-2A corridor is expected to start soon. The move is expected to further clog the already-choked Swami Vivekananda (SV) Road.
For those residing or travelling from western suburbs such as Borivali, Dahisar or Mira Road, commuting could become a tedious affair. Also, places such as Malad, Goregaon and Andheri are commercial hubs and lakhs of people travel to and fro from there daily. “The MMRDA is preparing a traffic management plan for the same and motorists could be diverted to SV Road for the time being while work on Link Road and the WEH is being carried out. We have also requested the railways and BEST to run more services,” said Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson, MMRDA.
The barricading work from Monday onwards will begin from Metro Mall in Borivali up to Devipada in Dahisar. It will be further carried out from Pathanwadi in Malad up to Pushpa Park in Kandivali, and from Hub Mall in Goregaon to the beginning of the Aarey Colony flyover.
The barricading work will take about 10 to 12 days, after which utility wrenching will begin, said the MMRDA in a statement.
“We request people to cooperate with us to complete this mega project in time, since it will relieve traffic congestion on the WEH as nearly 70,000 passengers are expected to travel in one direction in one hour, which is equivalent to more than 50 lanes of vehicular traffic. The corridor will also save time, energy and fuel and improve the environment,” said Pravin Darade, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
The alignment of the Metro-2A corridor is planned over Link Road and the construction viaducts for the Metro corridor will be on the median of the same, and this is expected to create a lot of problems, especially while the civil work is being executed. In the case of Metro-7, the planned alignment on the WEH is on the left-hand side, towards Ahmedabad.
