Following a spurt in cases complaining of high temperature accompanied with dysentery and vomiting, due to the fluctuating weather in the past few days, doctors have warned the public to seek medical help in case they experience such symptoms.

Rajiv Haldankar (name changed), 44, on Friday was rushed to the BMC–run KEM Hospital, after he complained of vomiting and passing blood in his stools. He had allegedly consumed bottle gourd (‘lauki’) juice, which may be the reason behind his deteriorating health condition. However, the doctors treating him are yet to detect the cause behind his illness.

Doctors treating him said the patient is suffering from an unknown type of dehydration. KEM’s acting dean Dr Anil Gwalani, said, “We have taken his blood samples for further investigations. Generally due to heat people tend to consume excessive liquid, this includes mostly outside juices (unpacked) which may contain bacteria, leading to adverse effect on the person.”

An average of 10 to 12 cases of dehydration and sunstroke have been approaching the hospital per day, due to the October heat. Doctors also said cases like gastroenteritis and viral infections are being noticed in the patients.

Dr Om Shrivastava, an infectious diseases expert who is a consultant at many city hospitals, said, “There are various viruses that get active and harm our immune system causing dysentery, vomiting and fever. The fluctuation in temperature keeps viruses active. If such symptoms are there, immediately seek doctor’s help rather than self-medication.”
