Meat prices likely to rise by 25 per cent

Meat prices are likely to rise by 25 per cent in the city.

Meat prices are likely to rise by 25 per cent in the city. Owing to inflation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed that the charges for various services it is offering at Deonar abattoir be hiked, which will result in increase in meat prices in the city.

According to civic officials, the daily expenditure at Deonar abattoir is increasing due to inflation, high maintenance cost, growing water and electricity charges and various types of government taxes. To offset this, the civic body has decided to increase service charges by six to 25 per cent at the abattoir.

Civic sources said goat meat is being sold in the city at the rate of Rs 500 to Rs 600. The rates will increase further if the civic body approves the hike in charges at the Deonar abattoir.

Most transactions at the Deonar abattoir take place on the incoming and outgoing of animals and their killings. The increase in the service charges is likely to increase municipal revenues by Rs 1.51 lakh.

Charges have been hiked for killing of animals for export, agents for animals and leather, grass contractors, traders of live animals, animal keepers, horned animals, goats and sheep contractors.

The hike in service rates at the abattoir, the biggest producer of mutton in the city, will directly affect the price of the commodity in the city’s market.

The civic body has 189 chambers where goats and sheep are purchased and mutton is sold. As per the statistics made available by the civic body, around 30,000 goats and sheep are purchased/sold on Tuesday and Saturday every week at the abattoir.
