You can now celebrate your Valentine’s Day at a specially created butterfly selfie point in the Byculla zoo. You can also salute the missile man and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at a flower missile erected in his honour by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

A butterfly selfie point and a flower missile, both aesthetically created with flowers, are the major attractions of the 21st Flower Show and Horticulture Exhibition, which was inaugurated on Friday at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale (VBJ) Udyan, also known as Byculla zoo. The three-day show, to be held till February 14, coincides with the Valentine’s Day celebrations, giving the perfect opportunity for people to celebrate amidst the flora and greenery.

A missile has been erected out of flowers with potted plants surrounding it. “We felt that this would be an apt tribute to the former President. Therefore when we started work on the expo a few months ago, we decided to erect the missile in his honour,” said Jitendra Pardesi, deputy superintendent (gardens).

According to the civic officials, though the BMC organises the horticulture exhibition every year, there is hardly any response from common people barring tree-lovers and experts. These two attractions will play a major role in attracting people in large numbers, they said.

“The selfie point has been created to attract youths. Such kinds of exhibitions are necessary to create awareness in people about flowers and trees,” said mayor Snehal Ambekar.

The three-day workshop will also witness several lectures being organised. The various lecture topics include gardening landscape and theme gardens, aromatic and medicinal plants, bonsai, plantation and maintenance of tall trees and conversion of organic waste into compost by vermiculture method and plant protection.
