Marathi a must for all boards: Vinod Tawde

Education minister Vinod Tawde announced in the Assembly on Friday that Marathi would be made a compulsory subject till Class 7 in IGCSE/IB, CBSE and ISCE schools in Maharashtra.

Education minister Vinod Tawde announced in the Assembly on Friday that Marathi would be made a compulsory subject till Class 7 in IGCSE/IB, CBSE and ISCE schools in Maharashtra. The history of Shivaji will also be taught. Incidentally, a Government Resolution to this effect, states that “CBSE/ICSE/ IB/IGSCE/ CIE curriculum schools till Std 8th will follow three language system. Marathi should be taught as the second language” is already in effect, but it is not being followed. The state has decided to enforce it more seriously.

The minister said that the Assembly would pass a resolution and send it to the Centre. “The move is necessary since it is important for children in the state to know the history and local language, he added. “For the first time, I have made it compulsory for CBSE/ICSE/IGCSE/IB/CIE schools in Maharashtra to teach Marathi till Class 7, while seeking an NOC from the education department.

I also want them to teach history of Maharashtra and especially about Shivaji Maharaj. Let’s adopt a resolution unanimously in the house and send it to Delhi,” Mr Tawde said, while replying to a query during question hour. He also pointed out that the history of Shivaji that is being taught in ICSE/CBSE/IGCSE/IB schools presently is limited to four lines.

Last year also the state government had appealed to the CBSE-affiliated schools to implement the three-language rule in toto with Marathi being a mandatory component till Class 8, however, very few schools had implemented it.
