A policeman on Wednesday was arrested on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe. The accused is attached to Mankhurd police station as a police naik. Following this incident, the senior police inspector (SPI) of the police station and another officer were transferred.

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials identified the arrested accused as Chandrakant Uddhav Dhadge (45). Sources in the Mumbai police confirmed that SPI Naseer Shaikh and assistant police inspector Jagtap have been transferred to the police control room.

According to sources, the complainant approached the ACB on June 7. “The complainant's relative had a case registered at Mankhurd police station. The complainant was trying very hard to save his relative and for the same, was making repeated rounds to the police station. It was during one of these visits that the complainant was approached by the arrested policeman,” said an officer.

Sources said that the case against the complainant’s relative was under Section 395 of the Indian Penal Code which pertains to dacoity. Sources mentioned that the Dhadhe was a part of the investigation of the complainant's relative's case “Dhadge allegedly approached the complainant informing the latter that he could prevent the arrest. He demanded Rs 120,000,” added the officer. ACB sources said that the complainant did not want to pay a public servant and hence approached the ACB to lodge a complaint.

“We confirmed that Mr Dhadge was indeed asking for a bribe and then accordingly laid a trap,” said an ACB source. Mr Dhadge allegedly decided to settle for less i.e. Rs 50,000 from the complainant. “We asked the complainant to call Mr Dhadge near a local bar. At the appointed time,

Dhadge reached and we nabbed him while he was accepting the money,” said the source.
