A man, his wife and daughter were arrested on Thursday after a video clip in which the trio allegedly torture the man’s 73-year-old mentally unstable mother, came to the notice of the police.

Social activists had submitted the three-month-old video clip to the police. The family is from DN Nagar in Andheri.

The trio has been identified as Surendra Vaidhya, his wife, Babita and daughter Akanksha. They were arrested at their flat in Shitladevi Society in Andheri.

In the clip, Surendra, Babita and Akanksha are seen torturing and laughing at Mayadevi Attar Singh Vaidhya, a retired sweeper. In one instance, she is seen hanging up side down from the ceiling fan with her duppatta.

The police sent Mayadevi for a medical test. However, she is mentally unstable and claims her son never hit her.

The trio was produced in a local court on Thursday where Surendra was remanded in police custody for a day and Babita and Akanksha in judicial custody.

The incident came to light after Sundari Thakur, an activist with a woman’s organisation, approached the police on Tuesday evening and showed them the clip.

According to officials, the accused admitted to their crime and they told the police that they wanted to threaten Mayadevi. “The accused had told police that Mayadevi was mentally unstable, and many a time she would wander away from home; so twice or thrice, Surendra tortured her to threaten her,” said an official.
