A 45-year-old man was crushed to death while trying to board a Kalyan bound train at Dadar station early on Saturday. This is second such incident that has occurred in Mumbai in the past four days.

Around 6.50 am, Shattiuddin Abdul Khan, a resident of Igatpuri, was attempting to board a train for Kalyan while returning from his village in Baroda. According to police officials, he got off on the Western line at Dadar from Baroda Mail and moved on to the Central line’s platform number 1 to board the slow local train to Kalyan.

Khan was accompanied by his wife and daughter and he helped them board the train but the train started off before he could get into it. He started running to get a grip on one of the hand rails and haul himself into a coach. However, the train soon picked up speed and before Khan realised, while running he reached the end of the platform and without being able to stop himself he fell off it directly onto the tracks and was run over by the train.

Commenting on the incident, Dadar GRP inspector S. Shinde said, “Khan wanted to reach Igatpuri soon for certain business-related work and also some family problems. He had gone to Baroda to attend a family function. On Saturday, he along with his family got off at platform number one when the local train for Kalyan had already arrived on the other platform.”

The official added, “In a hurry, Khan helped his wife and daughter board the train but before he too could board it, the train started off. He started running alongside the train, trying to get onto it but as the speed of the train increased, he kept running and did not realise that the platform had ended. He fell onto the tracks and was crushed by the train.”

Speaking about the deceased’s family, inspector Shinde said, “The women did not realise that Khan had fallen to his death. Other commuters helped them get off at Matunga station and brought them to Dadar. We registered the accidental death report and handed over the body to the family.”

Officials said, “He was a small businessman and was the only bread winner for his family. Also, he had recently fixed his daughter’s marriage.”

The video of his accident has gone viral similar to the Borivali incident that occurred on January 27 where a 55-year-old woman fell between the gap between the train and the platform and was crushed as the train started moving.
