The Ghatkopar police has arrested a man who allegedly posed as a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) official and cheated 50 people by promising to provide them houses at lower rates.
The police, which was interrogating the accused on Wednesday, said some Mhada department officials were also involved in the scam. Police officials said Hindurao Shejwal (38) had come to Mumbai from Satara in 2014 and since then, he had been cheating people by promising to provide Mhada homes at cheap rates. The accused lived near Vikhroli, the police said. Six months ago, he had met Dadasaheb Kamble (50) in the Mhada office. Then, Shejwal allegedly called up Mr Kamble several times and told him he was working in Mhada.
“A few months ago, Kamble has expressed a wish to buy a Mhada flat in Mumbai. At that time, the accused Shejwal promised to give a flat to him at cheaper rate within eight months. He was told that the price for a 2BHK flat would be '15 lakh. Mr Kamble believed Shejwal and made an initial payment of '3 lakh,” said Vankat Patil, senior PI, Ghatkopar.
“Later, he also showed Kamble a file that bore the name ‘Kamble’. So, Kamble gave him another '4.5 lakh. Shejwal then severed all communication with him and disappeared. Kamble was shocked to learn that Shejwal was not working with Mhada and then registered a complaint with the Ghatkopar police in February,” Mr Patil further said. “A week ago, Kamble accidently bumped into Shejwal near Tilak Nagar. Shejwal fled the place, but Kamble immediately informed the Tilak Nagar police. The Tilak Nagar police then arrested the accused and handed him over to the Ghatkopar police,” added Mr Patil.
