A conman has been arrested by the Bhayander police on Saturday for trying to extort Rs 21,000 from a doctor while posing as an MLA.
A conman has been arrested by the Bhayander police on Saturday for trying to extort Rs 21,000 from a doctor while posing as an MLA. He told the doctor that the money was for purchasing equipment for the physically challenged.
Deepak Malhotra (21) a resident of Golden Nest area in Bhayander made the call to Dr Sanjeev Gupta a well-known child specialist in Bhayander (eas). He told the doctor he was BJP MLA Narendra Mehta. He had mimicked the voice of the Mr Mehta and told the child specialist that he needed Rs 21,000 as donation to buy 100 wheel chairs and six AC ambulances.
Malhotra also told the medico that similar appeals had been made to other well-known citizens, said PI Shrikhant Padhule of Bhayander (east) police station. However, doubting the authenticity of the demand, the sceptical medico called the Mr Mehta’s PA to confirm with him. However, the PA denied any such donation drive by BJP. The doctor then filed a complaint with the police.
“The doctor lodged a case of extortion against the caller. We then laid a trap Friday evening,” said Mr Padhule. Malhotra, who mimicked Mr Mehta was arrested near his residence while accepting the cash; however, the mastermind is absconding. “The mastermind is one Siddesh Samant (36) and we have set a trap to arrest him,” he said.
