Man kills ‘unfaithful’ wife, hangs self

Their 8-year-old daughter was witness to the incident

Suspecting his wife of having an extra-marital affair, a 37-year-old man from Kandivali allegedly killed the 24-year-old woman before committing suicide on Monday night.

In the preliminary inquiry, police found that the couple’s relationship had soured as the husband Nitin suspected that his wife Surekha was being unfaithful to him and the couple would argue regularly on the matter.

The couple got married eight years ago and has two children — Samiksha (8) and Yuvaraj (7). Nitin used to work in Sai motor training school in Thakur village as a trainer while Surekha was a homemaker.

Confirming the incident, senior police inspector of Samta Nagar Dilip Yadav, said, “We have registered a case under IPC CR number 84/16 under section 302 (Murder), 342 (wrongful confinement) IPC r/w 37 Mumbai Police Act. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and further investigation is underway.”

According to police sources, Samiksha is the sole witness of this murder case, having seen her father slit the throat of her mother on Monday night. She apparently also witnessed Nitin hang himself after killing her mother.

Scared after the incident, Samiksha stayed at home the whole night and got out of the house only around 9.15 am on Tuesday. She along with her younger brother informed one of their relatives who lived nearby who called up the police. Sources from the police said Nitin was an alcoholic and would often physically abuse his wife.

One of the relatives, in her statement to the police, recalled how the couple had fought bitterly on Monday evening when she had to go and resolve the fight. She further stated Nitin suspected that his wife was having an extramarital affair. The relative added that she knew Surekha to be innocent of the allegations. However, after the relative left the scene, the couple resumed their fight and in a fit of rage Nitin slit Surekha’s throat with a knife, said sources from the police.

While the injured Surekha was screaming for help, their daughter Samiksha woke up but was too scared to do anything.

After Nitin realised what he had done, he used his wife’s dupatta to create a noose and hung himself from the ceiling.
