Crime branch officials on Wednesday arrested a man for possession of a deer skin. The accused was arrested after he had allegedly come to the city to sell the skin.

According to sources, the accused, identified as Mohammad Basid Naimuddin (38) was arrested from outside Dreamland Cinema theatre in Grant Road. The operation was led by senior inspector Prashant Raje and assisted by senior police inspector Santosh Kadam and others of unit 2 of the crime branch.

Constable Pramod Shirke received a tip that a man travelling with an illegally obtained deer skin would arrive in Mumbai to sell it. “Following the tip, we investigated and found that he would be coming near the theatre to broker a deal with a prospective client. Accordingly, we laid a trap and arrested him,” said an officer.

Officials say the deer skin seized was worth Rs 3.5 lakh. “There was only one hide and we are trying to find out where the accused procured it from. We will try to find whether he brought it himself or obtained it from someone else,” said the officer.
