A person posing as a BMC officer and conning people on the pretext of adding their names to the survey list of victims of the fire that broke out at Damu Nagar was arrested from a flat on Thursday night by Kashimira police. A local informed the police that a person was taking Rs 15,000 from each resident in return for adding their names to the survey list. The accused, O.M. Narayan Mishra, a resident of Highness Park Shiv Giri Residency, Mira Road, was booked by police under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the IPC. Later, he was produced in court and the court remanded him to police custody till February 1.

Police sources said that Bhayander resident, Khatib Salmani, came to know that Mr Mishra is claiming that BMC officials are surveying victims of the fire at Damu Nagar and he could add anyone’s name to the list, after which, the person would get all benefits, including a place in Damu Nagar. However, to get one’s name on the list, one had to pay Mr Mishra Rs 15,000 and only then would one be eligible for government relief.

Mr Salmani then approached Mr Mishra and gave him Rs 45,000, requesting him to add three names to the list. In the interim, Mr Salmani’s friend captured the transaction through a hidden camera. After paying the entire amount, when Mr Salmani asked Mr Mishra for identity proof, the latter got scared and tried to avoid conversation. At this point, Mr Salmani became sure that Mr Mishra is not a BMC employee and subsequently, he informed the police. The police believes Mr Mishra has cheated others as well and further inquiry is underway.
