Man held over fake US dollar racket

A man who allegedly conned several people by posing as a businessman and exchanging fake US dollars for real Indian currency has been arrested by D.B. Marg police station.

A man who allegedly conned several people by posing as a businessman and exchanging fake US dollars for real Indian currency has been arrested by D.B. Marg police station. He has over 25 cases registered against him in different police stations in Mumbai.

Police officials said the arrested accused, Salim Khan (28), is part of a gang of 20 to 25 people who are involved in this activity. Their modus operandi is to approach taxi drivers and tell them that they have come from abroad and are carrying dollars with them. When the taxi drivers take them to any shop, the cheats convince shopkeepers/businessmen about exchanging dollars at cheaper rates. These businessmen/shopkeepers are asked to go somewhere near Navi Mumbai. Members of the gang cut newspapers in the size of currency notes, attaching one or two dollar bills in the front and at the back to make it look like a bundle of dollars. Gullible persons are convinced about the exchange of US dollars at cheaper rates i.e. Rs 30 per US dollar.

Investigation officer of D.B. Marg police station, Nitin Lavande, said, “We have got a complaint from businessman, Bharat Jain. He was duped of Rs 2 lakh. We first nabbed the taxi driver and then took details of phone numbers on which the businessman was called. We then laid a trap to catch the cheats, posing as dealers. We were able to arrest only one member of the gang. We will arrest the rest of them soon.” He said the arrested accused, Salim Khan, joined the gang one and a half years ago.
