Man held for luring minor with promise of marriage

A 15-year-old girl who was lured to Mumbai from Agra with the false promise of getting married has been rescued from her 20-year-old boyfriend who had planned to sell her, the police said.

A 15-year-old girl who was lured to Mumbai from Agra with the false promise of getting married has been rescued from her 20-year-old boyfriend who had planned to sell her, the police said.

The police said accused Rajat Bedia, a resident of Roshan Nagar, Agra met the girl last year in Agra and told her he had already been to Mumbai and could take her there. The duo decided to get married and Bedia brought the girl to Mumbai five days ago.

After the girl’s parents registered a missing person complaint in an Agra police station, they were found to be staying in Mumbai.

PI Rajendra Patil of DB Marg police said, “Rajat and the girl were in Santacruz and he stayed in Grant Road a few years ago. On November 17, they came to Mumbai and stayed in Santacruz and they came to Grant Road on the 20th to stay.” Mr Patil said the duo had had sex during their stay and Bedia had been booked for rape.

DB Marg PSI Nitin Lavande said, “We are checking his previous records and through his behaviour and friends circles we came to know he had brought her here to sell her. We are investigating the case and registered it under POSCO sections, IPC 363 (punishment for kidnapping) and 376 (punishment for rape).”
