According to police officials, the incident happened on Monday in the Kannamvar Nagar area. The victim, Merry Swamy’s body was discovered when her neighbour Johnson Gaunder (39) tried knocking at the door in the morning and saw that she was lying on the floor. He immediately informed the police about the incident. Swamy was later taken to the hospital whereshe declared dead before admission.
Speaking about the case, police inspector (crime) Charu Bharti from the Vikhroli police station said, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that the woman was strangled. Also, when our official were checking her house, they realised that it could be a murder as most of the things in the house where lying scattered on the floor. We are searching for the accused now.”
The sexagenarian used to live by herself. Her husband had died a few years ago and they did not have any children. Police inspector Shiridhar Hanchate from Vikhroli police station said, “We received a tip off that the accused was trying to sell gold chain and earrings at a jewellery shop near Bhandup. Our team laid a trap and arrested him. During interrogation he accepted the crime and said that he had been keeping an eye on Swamy for the past few days and planned the robbery.” The inspector also said, “He knocked at Swamy’s door in the morning and when she opened it, he pushed her inside, gagged and strangled her before fleeing with all the cash and gold available in house.”
