Man held for attacking wife

A 52-year-old man who allegedly tried to kill his wife with a sickle was arrested by Dindoshi police on Wednesday.

A 52-year-old man who allegedly tried to kill his wife with a sickle was arrested by Dindoshi police on Wednesday. The man suspected his wife of having an affair, which led to frequent quarrels between them.

The victim, Kalpana Gaikwad (45) suffered serious head, hand and shoulder injuries and has been admitted to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali. Doctors said her condition is stable.

For the past few days, the couple was living apart and Kalpana’s husband and accused, Ramesh Gaikwad, was at his hometown, Satara, before returning to Mumbai. Ramesh used to work as a watchman but is presently unemployed while Kalpana works as a maid. They have two sons: a 24-year-old and a 22-year-old who works in a private firm. The family stays in Santosh Nagar in Goregaon (east).

Police sources said Ramesh is an alcoholic and often, under the influence of alcohol, fought with Kalpana over the suspected extra-marital affair. Earlier this month, following a similar fight, Ramesh left their house and moved to Satara. On Tuesday, he returned to the city and the very next day, confronted Kalpana with a sickle. At the time, Kalpana was at home with her sister while the couple’s sons had gone to work.

Ramesh attacked Kalpana with the sickle and she started to bleed. Immediately, the police was informed. During questioning, she told the police that she had been attacked by her husband. Ramesh’s sister-in-law too informed the police that Ramesh had attacked Kalpana. The police later arrested Ramesh from Dindoshi and booked him under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. He was produced in Borivali court on Thursday and remanded to police custody till January 30.
