The Palghar crime branch has arrested an absconding property developer who allegedly duped over 2,000 interested buyers of Rs 60 crore promising them cheap flats in Virar.
In 2013, the arrested developer Mohammad Abdul Khan had started two fake companies namely Eco-City Realty and Crystal Homocon Realty and claimed of building co-operative housing societies in Virar. He allegedly took deposits of around Rs 1 crore from 35 interested buyers and later went absconding. A case against Khan was first registered at the Arnala police station, but was later transferred to the crime branch that nabbed him from Hutatma Chowk area in South Mumbai on Monday.
According to crime branch officials, Khan cheated nearly 2,000 buyers and fled with around Rs 60 crore. In order to evade arrest, he fled to Pune, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
Officials are now trying to access the exact number of buyers Khan had cheated through his fake companies. “We have arrested Mohammad Abdul Khan and are checking his background. We will also find out how many more cheating cases have been registered against him. We are also searching for four-five more absconding accused in the case,” said an official, on the condition of anonymity.
