A 37-year-old man died in Goregaon after coming into contact with an electric wire on the road.

Local police has registered a case of negligence under section 304A of the IPC against an unknown person. The Goregaon police is investigating into how the electric wire was left hanging on the road and how the deceased came into contact with it. Meanwhile, the victim’s body, after autopsy, has been handed over to his family for final rites on Saturday.

Police officials said the incident occurred on Ram Mandir road in Goregaon west. The deceased, identified as Santosh Narayan Chavhan (37), a resident of Shram Safaly society of Yashwant Nagar, Goregaon, used to work in a private company. Late evening on Friday, he was walking along Ram Mandir road and wanted to go to the other side separated by a divider.

The divider has a street light pole and creepers planted by the BMC on its wall. According to officials, locals often crossed the road by stepping on the divider which in turn caused damage to the plants. To prevent this, barricades were installed on the divider. Chavhan opted to jump over the barricaded wire to go to the other side of the road. At the time of the incident, a broken wire of the street light pole was touching the barricade so, the moment Chavhan came in contact with it, he got an electric shock and collapsed on the road.

Police officials said one of Chavhan’s ears first touched the wire and got badly damaged after which he got an electric shock, fell on the road and died on the spot. Later, he was rushed to hospital. Sources said preliminary police investigation revealed that the electric wire belonged to Reliance but neither they nor the BMC had anything to do with the incident. The police is probing as to why the wire was hanging on the barricade and after investigation, necessary action will be taken.
