Man cheats investors of crores over insurance, held
The Mumbai police has arrested a person in connection with a cheating case where he — along with three other accused, — stole the database of the Birla Sun Life Insurance company and later approached Birla’s customers with fraudulent schemes and cheated them of crores of rupees.
The case has been registered in the NM Joshi police station.
The police said its preliminary investigation has revealed that the three accused created a company called Mymonie Financial Service Pvt Ltd to lure employees into depositing large sums of money on the pretext giving them handsome bonuses on their existing insurance policies. The complainant in the case is Guru Naikar, who works for Birla insurance as private investigator. He had discovered the fraud and reported the matter to the police on behalf of the company.
The company received many e-mails regarding money that it had lost. Therefore, the separate investigation wing of Birla started probing the matter along with the police and arrested a manager of Mymonie from Navi Mumbai on Friday. Explaining the accused’s modus operandi, one of the complainants in the case said, “I had received a call in which he told me that he was an employee of Birla Sun Life Insurance and he gave me details of the policy, adding that there would be a bonus benefit if I were to take another policy. He told me I would not receive any benefit if I would not invest in that particular policy. Later, he took the details of my bank account and told to pay money for the policy within 15 days. I came to know that it was a fraud after forking over one lakh rupees.”
A police official from the NMJ Marg police station said, “The accused had called many people telling them they were from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority. We have raided three offices of theirs and we will arrest the director of the company soon.”
