In what can be called as a boost to football lovers in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to develop a football ground at Malad at the cost of Rs 3.94 crore.
The construction of a football ground in the city has been the dream project of Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray, who is also the chairman of Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA). After taking over the reigns of the association three years back, Mr Thackeray had vowed to create a new ground in the city to promote football.
The BMC will develop the plot near D-Mart at Malad West Link Road into a football ground. The contract has been allotted to M/s Reliable Enterprises at the cost of Rs 3.94 crore. The contract period is 12 months, including the monsoon.
Along with the ground development, the works also include garden, water fountain, water-proofing, paver blocks etc. The proposal will be tabled before the civic standing committee for approval on Wednesday.
In an attempt to promote sports in the city, the BMC has decided to use playgrounds in the city for sporting activities and also to develop sports cell, which will have a centre in every ward.
