Maid arrested for stealing from senior PI
A 38-year-old maid has confessed to having stolen jewellery worth '3 lakh from a senior police officer’s house in Bhandup who had hired her as a servant. The lady has been arrested and has been sentenced to police custody till Monday.
Bhandup senior PI Shripad Kale had hired the lady five months ago when he joined duty, as she found the accused was from a poor background has children and needed support to run her home.
Supriya Gavas, the accused, stays at Thane Tembhi Naka with her husband and three children. She started working at the SPI’s house five months ago.
Later, she saw the SPI’s wife bring jewellery from the bank and keeping it in a cupboard and she planned to steal it, the police said.
According to officials, for the past two months, the accused used to steal one gold ornament from the cupboard and replace it with the same duplicate ornament of the same design. She had stolen more than seven ornaments, worth lakhs of rupees in the past two months, police said.
Later, when the the SPI’s wife took out her ornaments during Laxmi Pujan for Diwali, she noticed some of them looking different. When they took the ornaments to a jeweller, they realised it was fake jewellery.
