Setting the ball rolling for a cyber project worth Rs 9,000 crore, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday announced the commencement of around 38 cyber laboratories across Maharashtra. “This will ensure that we have an upper hand while tackling crimes,” Mr Fadnavis added.

The cyber project is part of the state government’s efforts to put a dedicated system in place to curb the rising cyber crimes. The project is expected to be complete by December this year. The government had planned a total of 44 such cyber laboratories across the state.

Of this, 38 were started on Monday at different locations. Besides this, the government is also planning to set up a centralised Computer Emergency Response Team soon.

Mr Fadnavis also said that all police stations have been linked with a central server and a crime and criminal tracking system has been developed. -"This is the first state in the country to do so. This has ensured a control in crime rates and an increase in the rate of conviction. We have taken the rate of conviction from 9 per cent to 52 per cent. Our agenda is that the common man needs to feel safe,-" he said.

-"The 38 cyber labs commenced across Maharashtra have been equipped to analyse mobile forensic and call detail records. The labs are aimed at increasing the cyber crime conviction rate,-" said IG (cyber cell, Maharashtra), Brijesh Singh. Mr Singh is also in charge of the cyber project.

Addressing people in Mumbai on the 70th Independence Day, Mr Fadnavis said the state government would provide all its services through a mobile application by October this year.
