The Maharashtra Lokayukta on Tuesday ordered an inquiry against minister of state for housing Ravindra Waikar, following allegations that a trust controlled by him had grabbed a prime piece of land in Aarey Colony and built an illegal floor in a gymnasium there.

This was revealed by Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam who had earlier alleged the housing minister misused his office to get slum rehabilitation projects cleared illegally.

Based on Mr Nirupam’s complaint, the Lokayukta summoned officials of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada), as it is the nodal agency for sanctioning MP/MLA funds. The Lokayukta had also summoned Mr Waikar in the case.

Mr Nirupam on Tuesday, said, “The Lokayukta will now conduct an inquiry that will go on for three days in the last week of September. Based on the findings of the inquiry conducted by Lokayukta all the concerned parties will be summoned to give their sides on the findings. If the reply is not satisfactory, the Lokayukta will further convert the inquiry into an investigation and direct the police to file an FIR against Mr Waikar.”

Meanwhile, Mr Waikar had claimed that he had received all permissions to construct the gymnasium and that there was no height restriction on the construction concerned.
