The much-delayed monorail project, which was launched in 2008, is finally showing signs of completion with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) commencing trial runs for the long awaited 10.24-km-long monorail phase-II between Wadala to Jacob Circle. The service will become operational at the beginning of 2017, the officials said.

“The MMRDA carried out a 3-km-long non-signalling trial run between Wadala Depot monorail stations to Acharya Atra Nagar monorail station near Antop Hill on Monday. The mono phase-II is fast approaching completion,” said, MMRDA in a statement on Friday.

“The trial run was quite successful and it was of quite importance as the phase-II passes through major sharp curves and densely populated areas. Several technicalities were noted and the technical team will work on them further. Also, MMRDA is yet to procure more five rolling stocks for the phase-II that will be better than the ones in operation for now,” said, Sanjay Khandare, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

According to the MMRDA, it will complete the unfinished civil works on phase-II like that of staircases and installing of various electrical fittings on the monorail stations by December.

“From our side, the work will be completed by the end of this year but it might take time for the trial runs to complete and there is no stipulated deadline that we have set for completing the deadline,” said U.P.S. Madan, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

“There are three stages of approval that we have to clear before the final safety certificate is given for opening the monorail to the general public,” added Mr Madan.
