Long distance trains to help reduce rush

In an effort to reduce the rush in trains, the Central Railway (CR) is toying with the idea of officially allowing local commuters to enter a long-distance train from Kalyan to CST.

In the second meeting of the special-panel formed under the direction of Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu, CR officials have recommended that commuters be allowed to enter three out of the 20 coaches of a long-distance passenger train.

“The trend of people entering a long-distance train at local trains is already happening. While some of the commuters have their season ticket/passes, some don’t. Now, the plan is to now monitor each of these trains and fine those travelling without valid season tickets,” said an official, requesting anonymity.

This, said the officials, would decrease the rush of people entering a local train, “Right now travelling in long-distance trains with a Mumbai local season ticket is illegal. We hope those who do not travel in these trains already will start doing so, thereby reducing the crowd-pressure on a local train,” added the official.
