Leaders shoot down proposal on frisking corporators

All group leaders have shot down the proposal enabling the frisking of corporators before they enter the BMC’s general body meeting.

All group leaders have shot down the proposal enabling the frisking of corporators before they enter the BMC’s general body meeting. The proposal was tabled before the group leaders by additional municipal commissioner Pallavi Darade on Friday, as per mayor Snehal Ambekar’s directives. Moreover, even the Shiv Sena did not back its mayor’s decision and shot down the proposal.

Group leaders have now decided that a separate committee comprising corporators from all parties will be formed to deliberate on the issue. This committee would present its draft policy to the administration, only after the consent of all corporators is received.

Ms Darade said, “The issue closely concerns corporators. We have accepted their decision to form their own committee and give us their views. As of now, the proposal remains ‘not taken’.” Ms Darade confirmed that the proposal was brought as per the mayor’s directives, following the incident of a senior Congress corporator dumping garbage on the mayor’s desk in February this year.

As per the proposal, corporators could be frisked before a meeting, marshals would guard the meeting hall to evict a corporator who was misbehaving in the house, and mobile jammers would be installed in the premises of the meeting.
