After a hunt of nearly three months, the Kurar police managed to arrest the constable who had fled the police station after allegedly burgling the police safe of valuables worth over '18 lakh. The valuables and jewellery kept in the safe had been recovered by the Kurar police station from over 46 cases in Malad.

The constable, identified as Ramzan Najir Tadvi, had gone missing since May after applying for leave. The case had come to light after the station conducted an audit.

Limbanna Totappa Vhanamane, senior police inspector of Kurar police station, confirmed the development. He said Tadvi, had been arrested at his native place in Jalgaon.

The case came to light after the police, while conducting an audit, found the safe ransacked. The Kurar police then began investigations and found Tadvi to be involved in the burglary and registered a case against him last Thursday. He was booked under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent) of the Indian Penal Code.

“After the audit we began investigations and at the same time, the constable left for his native place. stating that his father was unwell. When he did not return and did not respond to calls, we found it suspicious. We made several visits to his residence at the police quarters in Meghwadi as well as his house in his village but he was nowhere to be found,” said a police officer. While he has been arrested, the police is still clueless about the stolen valuables.

“The accused is not divulging details about where the stolen property is. We are still conducting investigations,” Mr Vhanamane said.
