The Mumbai police crime branch has begun the procedure of extraditing alleged gangster Kumar Krushna Pillai from Singapore. Pillai has at least five serious crime cases against him including a 2009 murder case in Mumbai. City police spokesperson, deputy commissioner of police, detection, Dhananjay Kulkarni, confirmed the development.

Pillai was detained in Singapore a couple of weeks ago based on a red corner notice (RCN) issued by them through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to the information provided by CBI on their website, Pillai is involved in cases related to use of weapons and explosives.

Mr Kulkarni said, “The fugitive Kumar Krushna Pillai was detained by Singapore authorities on our RCN. There are five serious cases registered against him. We have sent out extradition proposal to them and that we are fulfilling all requirements from them. It is a protracted process, which will take time to reach some definite stage.”

The 48-year-old gangster was in the news for threatening a politician recently. He is a chemical engineer by qualification. Pillai joined the underworld after his father, an alleged smuggler, was killed by another dreaded and most wanted gangster, Dawood Ibrahim. He was associated with another alleged gangster Ashwin Naik, also an engineer.

Pillai was a resident of Bhandup and after fleeing the country close to two decades ago, he started making extortion calls to builders in eastern suburbs as the real estate business was booming in Vikhroli, Bhandup and Kanjurmarg. The investigating agencies also came across Pillai’s name while investigating into weapon dealers and narcotics substances.
