The sorry state of Khernagar Municipal Secondary English School drives home the fact that Mumbai’s civic schools are in dire need of attention and repair. It has recently come to light that this school, where classes 9 and 10 are conducted, is in utter disrepair and students do not even have classrooms or benches.
The school, which operates from Bandra (east), has been holding all classes in a single hall where 179 students are crammed in daily. The school has no blackboards and it has an unclean bathroom, lacking toilet seats. There is also no staffroom for teachers or lunch room for students. The teachers and students have lunch together in the same hall that also serves as their classroom.
In a letter written to the BMC’s educational department, corporator Shivnath Darade, who is also a member of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) education committee, has asked the civic body to urgently repair the school’s premises.
Mr Darade has pointed out that the school does not even have a routine timetable. The students do not study various subjects during specific periods. In fact, they do not have teachers who are qualified enough to teach specific subjects. He said, “There is one teacher who attends to one class all day, and all classes function in the same hall. These teachers have not been appointed with due procedure. They do not have a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree in the respective subjects or language.”
Also, while three divisions from class 10 have been given separate classrooms, students are being made to sit on the floor.
