Kendriya Vidyalaya students take up compassion for animals

More than a million students of Kendriya Vidyalaya schools across the country will take lessons in compassion for animals through the humane education programme.

More than a million students of Kendriya Vidyalaya schools across the country will take lessons in compassion for animals through the humane education programme. The deputy commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya, after meeting a PETA India representative, issued notification to all its schools across India asking that they integrate the ‘Compassionate Citizen’ programme with the official curriculum.

‘Compassionate Citizen’ is designed to teach eight to 12 year olds to be kind to animals and has been endorsed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and the Central Board of Secondary Education. PETA has distributed educational resource material in English and Hindi to all Kendriya Vidyalaya schools.

An integral part of the programme will be students using their reasoning and writing skills to examine the meaningful yet complex lives of animals, explore how our relationship with them has changed over time, discover alternatives to their use and learn how to respond when they are in trouble. The motto of the programme is to create a sense of compassion in children towards animals through the 28-minute video, which is a teacher’s guide.

“PETA India is helping schools across the country cultivate compassion in the classroom,” said PETA India CEO, Poorva Joshipura. “Humane education empowers children to build a future in which animals, humans and the environment they live in are treated with dignity and respect.”
