Kalyan-Dombivali, on the outskirts of Mumbai, has been included in the third list of 27 smart cities announced by Union urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday. That apart, three more cities from poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi, found a place in the list, even as Amritsar topped the rankings, taking the total tally of cities all set to become smart to 60.

Two of the three cities from UP that figured in the list — Kanpur and Varanasi — were included in 10 smart Ganga cities last month as well. The third city from UP that figured in the list is Agra.

Mr Naidu said: “These 27 cities have proposed a total investment of Rs 66,883 crore under respective smart city plans, which takes the total proposed investment by 60 cities chosen so far to Rs 1,44,742 crore. In proposed investment by 27 cities announced today, Rs 42,524 crore has been assigned for area-based development and Rs 11,379 crore to technology-based pan-city solutions (21 per cent of total investment).”
