Kabaddi coach beats commuter to death, held
The Special Task Force (STF) of Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested a 29-year-old Kabaddi coach whose punches led to the death of a commuter. The deceased clicked a picture of the coach and his girlfriend, which angered the coach.
The arrested accused, Kiran Gaikwad, was sitting with his girlfriend on platform number 5 of Dadar (western railway) station, waiting for the Dadar-Dahanu shuttle train.
A police official said, “Mr Gaikwad spotted Harish Pawar (45), clicking pictures from inside a train coach. Mr Gaikwad entered the coach and confronted Pawar. After seeing the picture on Mr Pawar’s cellphone, he beat him black and blue. Pawar, a building contractor, was travelling with his employee who did not intervene. Pawar fell unconscious after Bandra station and was rushed to KEM Hospital where he was declared dead due to internal bleeding and clotting.”
Pawar’s family members and friends filed a complaint with the police after the incident.
A team of STF officials scanned CCTV camera footage from the railway station and using the same, tracked the woman and finally Mr Gaikwad from Dahanu. “He was apprehended by a team including senior inspector Vinod Chavan, inspectors Santosh Dhanwate, D. Pawar, Kiran Matkar and others on Thursday,” said Deepak Devraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police, GRP (WR).
The accused is also an insurance agent who was having an affair with the 25-year-old widow, who lost her husband in a train accident two years ago, GRP said. Gaikwad has been booked for murder.
