A jeweller from Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, was kidnapped, robbed and brutally assaulted by five unidentified men who later threw him 37 km away from the Navi Mumbai area.

The kidnappers also inflicted injuries on the jeweller’s leg and tongue with blades and screwdrivers. Police are looking for the five accused.

The victim has been identified as Bhupendra Maru who runs his own jewellery shop near Kalmboli for the past few years.

According to police officials, Mr Maru was with his family in his shop on the day of Laxmi Puja during Diwali. After performing the puja and bursting crackers while all the family members went home, Mr Maru remained in the shop. Around 9 pm he shut the shop and was walking towards his house, which is a few minutes away from the shop, when a car with five men stopped near him and forcefully put him in the car.

The police officials said, “They may have been using an Innova. They put Mr Maru in the car and drove around the city. For the first few minutes they frisked him and took away all the money and gold that he was carrying. They found Rs 6,000 in his pockets but were angry because they had expected to get more money off him. Later, they thought that Mr Maru might inform the police about the incident and their identity so they tried to cut his tongue with the help of blade. Again, when Mr Maru was trying to protect himself by kicking them, they tried to bore a hole into his leg with a screwdriver. Later, somewhere between Ambernath and Badlapur they threw him off the car and fled the area.”

Kalamboli senior PI Bajiroa Mohite said, “We received a call from Badlapur police station about Mr Maru around 3 am and are now looking for the five accused.”
