The Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan, the flagship programme of BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government, which aims to make 25,000 villages drought-free till 2019, will be showcased in an international forum during the World Water Summit, which is scheduled for next month in Morocco.

The project involves deepening and widening of streams, construction of cement and earthen stop dams, work on nullahs and digging of farm ponds. A mobile application, which has been developed by Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC), is being used to map these locations.

The mapped location can be monitored through this web page. The user will be able to download the application, view instruction manual and view mapping locations along with photographs.

District-wise, taluka-wise and work-wise statistics are also available both in tabular and graphics form. The project aims to make 5,000 villages free of water scarcity every year.

The project is the brainchild of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and it has earned the appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “It is a successful programme; it is being widely appreciated in India and we would be showcasing these at international forums as well. Soon the government would be making a presentation at an international conference in Morocco,” water conservation minister Prof Ram Shinde told reporters.

“The Jalyukt Shivar has now become a movement and private parties are joining hands with the government to create water storages locally without carrying out any major construction activity,” he said.
