The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired from the newly commissioned indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Kochi this morning. The warship was commissioned by the Indian Navy on Wednesday September 30. INS Kochi is a Kolkata-class missile destroyer. The warship is equipped with 16 BrahMos missiles so the Navy tested them on Sunday morning.
“The test firing was conducted in the Arabian Sea off the west coast of the country. The missile accurately hit its target, a decommissioned ship Allepey, at range 290 km,” confirmed the official spokesperson of the Navy.
Defence experts consider it a significant step in the operationalisation of the Navy’s latest guided-missile stealth destroyer.
INS Kochi is packed with an array of state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, with a significant indigenous component. The ship thus has many lethal weapons to her credit which includes the successful fitment of vertically launched missile system for long distance engagement of shore and sea-based targets.
The is one of the few warships in the world and second in the Indian Navy to have multi-function surveillance and threat alert radar for target data to long range surface to air missile system.
