In yet another assault on city police, an inebriated man beat up a police officer, who works with the Charkop police station. The officer, Nanda Krishna Naik, has been admitted to hospital while the accused, Pahal Rawal, has been arrested.
Officials said that the drunken man was moving near a Ganesh immersion procession and got aggressive and hit the policeman after he was asked to move. In the last 15 days, this is the 10th instance where a policeman has been assaulted in the city.
At the time of the incident which occurred on Thursday in Kandivali (west), Mr Naik was on routine patrolling duty with his team when Rawal hit him with a lathi. Mr Naik, an assistant sub-inspector, sustained minor injuries in the attack. Officials said Mr Naik was patrolling in the
Charkop area in his jurisdiction when suddenly, he spotted Rawal roaming about suspiciously near a Ganesh immersion procession and stopped him. Realising that Rawal was under the influence of alcohol, Mr Naik started questioning him and told him to move away. Following which, Rawal hit Mr Naik with a lathi and was subsequently arrested for attacking an on-duty police official. Mr Naik was immediately rushed to hospital. Police officials of Charkop are now checking to see if Rawal is a roadside dweller.
