Indrani Mukerjea back in jail, didn’t have dengue

Indrani Mukerjea was sent back to Byculla Jail Thursday evening after spending 24 hours in J.J. Hospital.

Indrani Mukerjea was sent back to Byculla Jail Thursday evening after spending 24 hours in J.J. Hospital. Doctors confirmed that she had not contracted dengue and her platelet count had also increased significantly after hospitalisation.

Dr. Tatya Rao Lahane, Dean of J.J. Hospital, told The Asian Age, “Indrani was recovering, so we discharged her. Her platelet level is fine now. Indrani was just suffering from fever.”

“Her tests (for dengue) were negative and after hospitalisation, her platelet level became substantially better compared to earlier. On Thursday, her platelets were 98,000 which is very much good, so after consulting the physician, we discharged her at about 4 pm. She had been kept in the CCU unit,” he said.

On Wednesday at around 4pm, Byculla Jail authorities shifted Indrani to government-aided J.J. Hospital after seeing her platelet level drop to 65,000. She was suspected to have contracted dengue.

“On Wednesday, Indrani’s platelet level was down, but on Thursday she showed signs of improvement so we discharged her,” said J.J. Hospital authorities. “She now appears fine and is back in her same barrack,” said jail authorities.

Physician Dr Omprakash Joshi, while explaining the importance of platelet count and its effects said, “A dip in platelet level may occur sometimes due to fever and not necessarily dengue. Proper medical scrutiny and medicines can bring up the platelet count.”

Meanwhile, IG, Prisons, Bipin Kumar Singh, said, “Indrani was unwell. She was suffering from viral, fever and body ache for the last few days. After her platelet level dropped, she was admitted to hospital. She is fine now and has returned to jail.”
