In yet another life-saving mission, the Indian Coast guard rescued 14 fishermen from a fishing boat that had started flooding owing to a crack in its hull on Sunday. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, was alerted about this boat at about 10 pm on February 6.
Later, the western command of coast guard, Mumbai, alerted the district headquarters at Goa, and immediate help was offered. All 14 fishermen were then rescued by February 7 early morning. An official from the coast guard (CG) said, “The fishing boat has been tied alongside the coast guard jetty at Goa and water is being pumped out of it by the CG team before further repairs can be carried out.”
The fishing boat Nixymol was travelling with 14 fishermen on board when it started flooding suddenly owing to a crack in its hull.
The boat crew immediately reported this to MRCC, Mumbai. At the time of the incident, the boat was travelling approximately 80 km north of Goa. After learning about the incident, a coast guard ship C-410 rushed to the spot and spotted the boat around 1 am. After this, the 11 fishermen were shifted to the CG ship and the boat was towed with three fishermen onboard. “At about 5.15 am on Sunday, the CG ship reached the Goa harbour with all the 14 fishermen safely,” said the official spokesperson of the cCast Guard.
In 2015, the Indian Coast guard (ICG) saved as many as 195 lives offshore Mumbai in 25 operations.
