India’s highest flag likely to flutter at Shivaji Park

If everything goes according to plan, then the city will see highest flag in the country — 74 metres — at Shivaji Park in Dadar on Maharashtra Day, which is celebrated on May 1.

If everything goes according to plan, then the city will see highest flag in the country — 74 metres — at Shivaji Park in Dadar on Maharashtra Day, which is celebrated on May 1. The project is awaiting final permission from the Mumbai Heritage Committee.

Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale, who has been pursuing the project, said that two places have been identified for the flag — one at the Balasaheb Thackeray memorial and the other at the centre of the park. “We have sought the approval of Flag Foundation of India and also submitted a proposal to Mumbai Heritage Committee. After getting their permission, it will be set up with the help of the foundation, the BMC and the MP funds,” said Mr Shewale.

The Flag Foundation will maintain the flag that will be installed permanently. The permission of the heritage committee assumes importance, as the project will require construction at the Shivaji Park, which is a heritage site. A concrete base will be laid on which a steel pole will be installed with a blower at a particular height to keep the flag fluttering.

Presently, the highest tricolour of the country flutters at the height of 70 metres at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters in Belapur.
