The immigration officials of Mumbai airport arrested a man from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) after a red-corner notice was issued against the person. After the arrest, the person was handed over to the Sahar police station, which takes care of the cases at the international airport. Confirming this development, the ACP of the airport region, Suresh Vedak, said, “The person — Karimi Salim (50) — is presently under judicial custody till Tuesday.”

According to the police sources, Salim is a US national of Indian origin and he has a red-corner notice issued against him for a fraud there.

The notice was issued against him by United States’ authorities in 2015. After learning the facts, immigration officers launched a hunt for Salim in the city and arrested him on December 26 at about 7.45 am near CST.

According to the immigration officials he faces charges of fraud in local municipalities. He and others operated an overbilling scheme that defrauded local municipalities and financial institutions of over $50 million. Salim operated Advanced Development investment corporation, a low-income group housing developer. He had allegedly caused fraudulent invoices and lien releases to be created and submitted to municipalities and banks, causing them to overpay millions of dollars. They then siphoned money to Indian banks for his personal benefit.
