IMD’s forecast a huge relief for drought stricken state

Indian Meteorological Department’s confirmation about above normal rainfall, mostly from 104 per cent to 110 per cent, has come as a huge relief for drought stricken Maharashtra.

Indian Meteorological Department’s confirmation about above normal rainfall, mostly from 104 per cent to 110 per cent, has come as a huge relief for drought stricken Maharashtra.

On Thursday, IMD officials confirmed that rainfall this year is likely to be an average of 113 per cent. IMD also hailed movement of the southwest monsoon as a boon across the nation during the June-September period. “There is a 0 per cent chance of deficient or below normal monsoon season rainfall in 2016,” said the IMD report.

IMD issued operational long-range forecasts for the southwest monsoon (June-September) over the country in two stages. Pointing out the weakening El Niño conditions, IMD officials confirmed on Thursday that rapid decline of conditions in early April 2016 were the result of a favourable monsoon across the state.

“The El Nino conditions were weak in early May and now have turned to neutral. Recent changes in the atmospheric conditions over the Pacific also reflect the weakening El Niño conditions which are likely to continue and turn to weak La Nina conditions in the latter part of the monsoon season,” said IMD experts.

IMD confirmed that the experimental forecast model of monsoon rainfall from June to September, averaged over the country as a whole, was likely to be at 112 per cent.
