They might be involved in making crucial governmental decisions, but a Right To Information (RTI) query revealed that several IAS and government officers have failed to pay the rent for the occupied government quarters they are residing in.

The state public works department (PWD) recently handed over the list and names of the officers to the general administration department (GAD) who have been occupying government accommodation and have not paid rent costing Rs 65 lakh to the state government.

Replying to the RTI query filed by RTI activist, Anil Galgali, the executive engineer of the PWD department stated that there are five bureaucrats among the 12 who have not yet vacated from the respective accommodation allotted to them earlier despite having been transferred long time back.

The officers, according to Mr Galgali, include Thane collector Ashwini Joshi, deputy collector, Thane, Kamalakar Fand, officer Anil Sontakke, ex-judge Prakash Rathod, judge Pankaj Shah and other officers named as Kashinath Jadhav, Vasant Panchal Dhanaji Toraskar, all working with different departments of the state government. Ms Joshi, who was transferred on December 17, 2014, is still occupying her flat in ‘Kedar 2’ for which PWD had sent a notice with punishable dues of Rs 3.06 lakh.

Mr Galgali said these officers were lawbreakers and demanded that strict action.
