Hundreds of agitating women, including Bhumata Brigade president Trupti Desai were detained when they attempted to march up to the Maharashtra State Farming Corporation (MSFC) office in Pune, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Ms Desai, around 6,000 women, who work on the MSFC farms have been rendered unemployed and have been demanding re-instatement of their jobs, wages and bonuses. Presently the corporation is outsourcing its work.

On Tuesday, the women were detained when they reached the MSFC office, and taken to Chaturshringi police station. Ms Desai was placed in detention and was not available to speak till evening, claimed sources.

On the same day, thousands of unemployed farm workers, a majority of them being women, converged at Chaturshringi Temple gate at 1 pm and began their march towards MSFC office, about two km away. Bhumata Brigade, the MSFC action committee president, general secretary Subhash Kulkarni and others led the rally, which included a sizeable number of men as well.

The protestors said that the managing director of MSFC was not implementing the orders given by the Aurangabad Bench of Bombay high court.
